This photo is one of my favorites — that’s me on the tractor seat, and my older brother standing beside me. We were probably about 9 and 11 years old, living next door to our grandparents, who were truck farmers. That meant they had a small farm that produced fruits and vegetables to sell at local markets. My grandmother also grew flowers — I remember the large field of phlox in shades of purple, pink, and white. When it was in bloom, it was breathtaking.
Back then, there were no video games. My brother and I spent our summers working in the garden.
One year, my dad came home from work and tossed a sack of green bean seeds onto the kitchen table. He told my brother, “Plant these, sell the beans, and you can keep the money.” So we did — or rather, he did the selling, and I helped with the planting and picking. I don’t remember seeing much of the money, but I do remember this photo — the crates filled with green beans, the sun, the old red tractor. (My brother still has that old red tractor and uses it on his farm which is across the road from Rocky Meadows)!
It’s one of my earliest memories of the farm — and it’s a big reason I’m here today at Rocky Meadows. My love for growing, cooking, and sharing food all started in that garden.
Rocky Meadows is a beautiful farm and I have heard many of the early memories and they are fun to listen to. She has a special relationship with her brother n they share the love of the country lifestyle. She is an incredible cook as I’ve tasted a few of the recipe’s on the website. Try a few and enjoy!!
Thank you Mike!
